Cherry & Tiger Maple Shaker Cupboard

This classic Shaker styled cupboard was made of 30 year old cherry and tiger
maple book-matched panels, drawer fronts, and corner pieces. This combination of
American hardwoods was commonly used by the Shakers. The use of beautifully
figured hardwoods was permitted in the Shakers simple styled furniture. They
believed that it was God who made the tree that yielded such beauty, and not
their hands.
The panels are made of 5/4 tiger maple stock that is split in two pieces and placed next to each other in the doors to create a "mirrored" bookmatch effect. The panels on the sides of the cupboard are all on the same horizontal plane as the panels in the doors and drawer fronts.
The pieces of cherry that make up the doors and side panel rails and stiles are cut out of the pieces of wood, as to carry the same grain patterns both in the horizontal and vertical adjacent pieces. Such care to layout all the pieces like a puzzle is the kind of attention to detail that sets our pieces apart.
This piece measures 78" high, 42" wide, 22 1/2" deep. It was finished with 4 coats of catalyzed varnish, hand rubbed between each coat. There were no stains used to allow the complete beauty of the grain to show through.
