Walnut Custom Home Library
Olsen Estate - Bedford, N.Y.
"Old World" workmanship, hand built & installed to order.
Built by The Delnero Fine Furniture & Cabinetry Company, Fort Plain, N.Y.
Posing in front of the back side of Joanne's Bedford NY Estate, Delnero Fine Furniture Co. was commissioned to rebuild the original custom home library.
Though this amazing home is only 4 years old, the decision to rebuild the library was made after engineered "floating" flooring was nailed down (by mistake) damaging the room's radiant heating. The room's concrete floor needed to be taken out, the damaged heat plumbing replaced, and new concrete floor poured.
BEFORE: A shot of Jared bringing in Mike's drafting table, so he could make detailed working drawings on site. Joanne wanted to reproduce much of the original library's features, though she took advantage of this opportunity of moving a major wall, giving the room much better proportions. Through creative design and custom workmanship, we were able to meet the challenges of integrating improvements seamlessly into the existing design of this home library.
AFTER: A shot of the same wall after completion. From left to right you can see the edge of the fire place, lighted bookcase flanked by fluted columns, and entrance leaded glass doors flanked by raised paneled walls.
From our history of 4 generations building fine furniture, the mind set here is to build each component as a quality piece of furniture. Designing a custom home library is so much more than just "where do we place the mantel".
BEFORE: A shot of the fireplace framework after the original mahogany walls were taken off. Joanne's insurance company took all the original materials, though we saved a minimal amount of trim to the right of the fireplace, to reproduce as closely as possible.
AFTER: A shot of the finished fireplace and mantel. The carved lions were part of the original library's design. We painstakingly stripped the carvings to raw wood, and custom stained them to match the rest of the walnut wood. All the moldings, panels, soffits, and all were built by hand in our shop and pre-finished to lessen the impact of our time spent installing in Joanne's home. Though we still needed to hand fit the trim & molding stock, all the main components to this job were built to the finished dimension, saving hundreds of cuts on site.
In the original design, there were bookcases that sat on this wall nearly 3 ft. forward from where the new paneled wall was placed. By moving this wall back, it really opened up the room, making this space much more versatile. This settee below would have been too close to the fireplace. The large panel between the fluted columns measured 62" wide!
For many, the home library is an important addition to a house. It serves multiple purposes. A peaceful sanctuary, a home office, or place where guests will congregate during gatherings.
