Mahogany is a beautiful wood with a rich red and golden color. During the early part of the 20th Century, Mahogany was by far the most popular wood fine furniture was built from. In those days is was also very popular to stain it almost black. After years of seeing dark Mahogany pieces in auctions most people do not realize how wonderful Mahogany looks finished natural.

Woods with what is called "open" grains, take on a different look if they are cut a certain way. In the old days they would cut all wood in a method called Quarter Sawn. It was done in those days primarily to make the wood more stable. The process unfortunately wastes about 20% of the tree, and is more expensive.

Quarter sawn mahogany brings out an iridescent appearance of stripes that actually dance as you walk by. Areas that look dark become the light areas, back and forth the light and dark areas change making the stripes move as they catch the different light.
