Both curly and tiger maple come from regular maple trees that have a wavy or "curly" pattern
in their grain. If you split a piece of figured maple with an ax, you see the wavy pattern.
Because end grain stains and is darker than that of side grain, all you're seeing is end grain coming out of the side of a figured piece of maple.
The steeper the angle of the curl, the more figured it appears.

Tiger Maple is that striped figure found in soft maple. It ranges in intensity from what we call lightly figured, to heavily figured, to heirloom grade.
