In the old days, all wood was quarter sawn to make it most stable.
When oak is quarter sawn, the grain looks much different than that of flat sawn
oak. The grain is very straight, and often has little lines in it called fleck. When
White Oak is quarter sawn, it usually has more fleck than Red Oak, and is the
spiecies of choice for those who like this look.
